Physics Department

Aims
The general aims of the department are to develop the essential knowledge and understanding of Physics through its applications. The development of ideas in Physics is followed from theory, through experiment, on to application with social, economic and technical considerations. To achieve this, the complimentary mathematical and practical skills are developed over the duration of the courses.

KS3
The Department follows the QCA scheme in line with the middle schools’ Programme of Study.
Topics covered include:

  • Gravity and Space
  • Speed and Motion
  • Electricity and Energy
  • Pressure and Moments

The Year 10 Syllabus is also started after the SAT test.

GCSE
The following syllabi are used by the department:

OCR GCSE Gateway Science:  Physics B
OCR GCSE Gateway Science:  Core Science B
OCR GCSE Gateway Science:  Additional Science B

A Level Physics
AS/A2

The course (EDEXCEL Physics) allows and encourages the students to use a wide variety of modern applications to act as both springboard to, and verification of Physical concepts.
The following modules are studied at AS:

  • Mechanics and Radioactivity
  • Electricity and Thermal Physics
  • Options module and Practical Examination

The following modules are studied at A2:

  • Waves and Our Universe
  • Fields and Forces
  • Practical Examination
  • Synthesis Paper

Facilities
The Physics Department has the use of several teaching laboratories in the Wolgarston Science School.
The department has the use of interactive white boards and data projectors to enhance the delivery of the curriculum. This is in line with the developing use of ICT within the subject through all levels in the Sciences.
Computer modelling, data-logging and analysis, and specialised teaching software are integrated into the teaching of Physics at all levels in the School.
