A level English Literature

Course Details

This is the modern version of the traditional English Literature A level, and represents an up-to-date approach to a range of plays, poems and novels.
Several areas of the course are developments of work at GCSE but others are new. You will study texts dating from the 21st century to the 15th century.
You will develop your interest and enjoyment of literature by reading widely and gaining an understanding of the traditions of English Literature.  Your ability to understand and to get the most out of your reading will increase as you read and comment on modern and historical texts in their own contexts.

You will develop the ability to express and extend your own ideas.

Units at AS

Unit 1 Explorations in Prose and Poetry (60% of AS)
Unit 2 Explorations in Drama (Course-work 40% of AS)

Units at A2

Unit 3 Interpretations of Prose and Poetry (60% of A2)
Unit 4 Reflections in Literary Studies (Course-work 40% of A2)

This course will appeal to students who:-

Skills required to start the course

Students are generally expected to have achieved at least a grade B at GCSE in English and English Literature.

Entry requirements

Students of A2 English Literature must have taken AS English Literature.

Possible Career Pathways

Students with AS or A level English Literature have a wide range of possible career and higher education opportunities.  You will learn to use a variety of transferable skills during the course, which are in demand from employers and universities, and are also valuable in their own right. 

This is the course which leads to:-

The study of English Literature as a single subject in higher education
It can also be combined with a wide variety of other subjects such as History, Philosophy, Law, Politics or languages.
