BTEC First Diploma

Course Details

What is a BTEC First Diploma?

A BTEC First Diloma is a practical, work-related course.  You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands.It introduces you to the employment area you have chosen and providedes a good basis to go on to a more advanced work-related qualification.

A BTEC First Diploma is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A* - C and is normally taken as a full-time course.

What are the entry requirements?

You will normally need to have at least one of the following:-

• A BTEC Foundation Certificate in a related subject
• A standard of literacy and numeracy supported by a general Education equivalent to 4 GCSEs at grades D-G
• Related work experience
• Other related level 1 or 2 qualifications

What is the course structure?

The course is made up of six units - three core units that everyone
takes and three specialist units.  The specialist units enable you to
study particular areas in more depth.

What subjects will I study?

All students take the three core units::-
  
Introduction to the Travel and Tourism Industry  *
Introduction to Tourist Destinations
Introduction to Customer Service in Travel and Tourism

You take three specialist units:

Introduction to Marketing in Travel and Tourism
Introduction to the Business of Travel and Tourism
Organising a Travel and Tourism Event work-based Project
Within the Travel and Tourism Industry
Travel and Tourism Study Visit

   *denotes a unit assessed via an Integrated Vocational Assignment (IVA)

 How is the course assessed?

All units are assessed, and graded and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.

What can I do at the end of the course?

With further training or study, students go into careers in the Travel and Tourism industry.

A BTEC First Diploma prepares you for employment and provides a good grounding to go no to a more advanced course such as:-

•BTEC National Diploma, Certificate or Award in Travel and
         Tourism  
•BTEC National Diploma, Certificate or Award in Airline and
         Airport Operations
•BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Travel Operations

What are the skills required to start the course?

Students need to be literate and have the ability to analyse, interpret and evaluate. An interest in current affairs is also essential.

GCSE Requirements

Students are generally expected to have achieved at least a grade B in English and a related subject such as History, Geography or Religious Studies.

Possible Career Pathways

Sociology can be studied at degree level, and is relevant to careers in fields such as the police, probation service, legal careers, nursing, journalism.  The prison service, social work and teaching.
