Sociology is the study of people, their behaviour and society.
Units at AS
1. Families and Households
The study of the role of the family, the changing roles of men and women, the rise of single parenthood, divorce and cohabitation, and the changing nature of childhood.
2.Sociological Methods
The study of the purpose of education, changes in education and the effect of social class, gender and race, on what people achieve in schools. This unit incorporates the application of sociological research methods to the study of education.
Units at A2
1.Beliefs in Society
The significance of religion and religiosity in the contemporary world, including the nature and extent of secularisation in a global context.
2.Crime and Deviance and Theory and Methods
The study of who commits crime and why, normality and abnormality - and who decides which is which, and the investigation of the social causes of suicide. This unit also investigates the connection between sociological theory and methods and the study of crime and deviance.
What are the skills required to start the course?
Students need to be literate and have the ability to analyse, interpret and evaluate. An interest in current affairs is also essential.
GCSE Requirements
Students are generally expected to have achieved at least a grade B in English and a related subject such as History, Geography or Religious Studies.
Possible Career Pathways
Sociology can be studied at degree level, and is relevant to careers in fields such as the police, probation service, legal careers, nursing, journalism. The prison service, social work and teaching.
