Course Details

A/S Outline

At A/S Level, all students study core human and physical geogra-phy.  In each area of study students consider the values and atti-tudes of decision makers, consider their own values and attitudes to the issues being studied and support their learning of ideas through the study of specific case studies. 

Unit 1: Physical and Human Geography (35%)
• Rivers, floods and management
• Cold environments or coastal environments or hot desert environments
• Global population change
• Food supply issues or energy issues or health issues

Unit 2: Applied Geography (15%)
• Basic, investigative, ICT, graphical, cartographical and statistical skills
• Research skills and the assessment of A/S fieldwork

A2 Outline
At A2, students continue to study a combination of human and physical geography.  Students are required to choose whether to undertake preparatory investigative work in the field in order to be able to produce a fieldwork investigation, or to undertake an is-sue evaluation exercise.  Which ever is chosen, both Units 4A and 4B are assessed by a written examination.

Unit 3: Contemporary Geographical Issues (30%)

(at least three of the following topics must be studied.  Schools may select topics.)
• Plate tectonics and associated hazards
• Weather and climate and associated hazards
• Challenges facing ecosystems
 World cities - evolution or revolution?
• Development and globalisation
•  Contemporary conflicts and challenges
• Contemporary conflicts and challenges

Unit 4A:Geography Fieldwork Investigation (20%)
• Questions based upon own fieldwork investigation
or
Unit 4B:Geographical Issues Evaluation (20%)
• Questions based upon an Advance Information Booklet

or

What are the skills required to start the course?

A genuine enjoyment of the subject, and a wish to further in-vestigate the physical and human environments around us.

GCSE Entry Requirements

Students are generally expected to have achieved at least a grade B Minimum in GCSE Geography with preferably a higher grade for those students wishing to take A2 level.

Possible Career Pathways

Town and Country Planner, Geologist, Tourist industry, Hy-drologist, Teacher, Civil Engineer, Landscape Architect, Countryside Officer and many more.
