Year 10 Biology 

In year 10 all students will study these Modules in Biology:- 

Module 1 Understanding ourselves

Topics in this module include how to keep fit and the importance of exercise, diet and digestion, disease and immunity, eye sight and the nervous system, drugs and alcohol, maintaining a constant internal environment, the structure of DNA and mechanisms of inheriting characteristics. 

Module 2 Understanding our environment

Topics in this module include the ecology of the school grounds, including collection methods, the classification of organisms, how photosynthesis works and factors that speed up (and slow down) photosynthesis, the nature of selection and competition for survival, adaptations of animals and plants and the effects of humans on the environment. 

There are also two elements of coursework which are done across the teaching of science, these are “Can-do tasks” in which pupils are assessed on their practical ability in specific lesson and “Science in the News” which is a report is investigated by the student and written in class about a specific topic in science.

Year 11 Biology 

In year 11 all students will study these Modules in Biology:- 

Module 3 Living and growing

Topics in this module include how DNA is copied and arranged, the nature of enzymes, the role of diffusion on plants and animals, blood, blood vessels and the heart, cell division, plant and animal cells, the control of plant growth and genetic modification and gene technology. 

Module 4 It’s a green world

Topics in this module include the structure of the leaf and giant plants, movement of water in the plant, the vascular transport systems of plants, minerals essential for good plant growth, the flow of energy through food chains different ways to farm, decay and recycling of materials, the carbon cycle and the nitrogen cycle. 

There are also two elements of coursework which are done across the teaching of science, these are a research task and a data handling exercise.
