The Post 16 Offer at Wolgarston |
How to decide which is the best route to success for you.
In order to calculate this, you first need to work out your current average GCSE points score by taking an average of your 10 best GCSE target grades. Work this out by using the formula below:-
A* - 8 |
A 7 |
B 6 |
C 5 |
D 4 |
E 3 |
F 2 |
G 1 |
Once you have your average points score you can choose the best route to success for you. |

Routes to success.
Route One |
With a score of 6 or above, the best choice would be to take four AS Levels from the A Level Offer.
Route Two |
Score between 4.5 and 5.9, then three AS Levels from the A Level Offer would be the most appropriate option.
Route Three |
Scoring between 3.5 and 4.4 suggests that a mixed package is the best one to follow. This means taking one course from the Level 2 Offer and combining it with one subject from the A Level Offer.
Route Four |
A score of between 2.7 and 3.4 would make a course from the Level 2 Offer as one most likely to bring success.

The A Level (Level 3) Offer |
In all advanced level subjects, students are able to achieve an AS level in the first year and attain a full A Level, called A2, in the second year. In order to study at this level, students are generally expected to have achieved at least a grade B in that subject at GCSE. With the new start subjects, suitability can usually be measured against an equivalent grade in English. GCSE English and Mathematics are available to those students who require a re-sit.

The Level 2 Offer |
BTec qualifications are well established and have good currency with employers. There are clear progression routes right through to University level qualifications. The size of the qualification is given in guided learning hours (glh). For example a First Diploma requires 360 glh about 10 hours per week for a year if the course is taken post 16, or 5 hours per week over 2 years if it is taken post 14.
We are offering 3 BTec Firsts to Year 12 from September 2008. We also offer the Diploma in Digital Applications (DiDA) which is very similar.
BTec First Diplomas
- The equivalent of 4 GCSEs at A*-C
- Require 360 glh (a one year course at post 16)
- Assessed by portfolio no examinations
- Students complete 6 units to achieve the diploma
- Graded at Pass, Merit and Distinction
- Vocational so include relevant work placements and employability skills
- Include input from local employers
- Include transferable skills (e.g. Travel and Tourism includes a customer service unit which will support applications to many employment sectors not just tourism)
- Clear progression routes available in the local area (either in our sixth form or at a local college)
- Entry requirements: a GCSE Points Score of 2.7 or above
Students opting for a Level 2 course will also have the opportunity to retake English and Maths if necessary. We are also going to offer them GCSE Photography. So an exciting programme can be individually constructed:
Main Course: BTec or DIDA (10 hours)
Work Placements: Linked to main course (1 day per week)
Enrichment: Including qualifications such as First Aid, Sports Leadership and Customer Service, Certificate of Professional Effectiveness
Students can be funded for up to 3 years 16-19, so it is quite possible to take a one year programme and then progress on to a two year course, either at Wolgarston or at a local college.
