Careers Education and Guidance

Careers education and guidance programmes make a major contribution to preparing young people for opportunities, responsibilities, and experience of life.  They help young people make decisions and manage transitions as learners and workers.  With the introduction of more flexible routes for 14-19 year olds, it is vital that young people have the knowledge and skills they need to make informed choices.

To support the careers programmes across all Key Stages, Connexions Advisors talk to all tutor groups explaining the options available to them at key points in their education e.g. GCSE Options, Post 16 Options and Post Key Stage 5 Options.  Individual interviews take place throughout all Key Stages, and students can self refer for these.  The Connexions Advisors are also available on a ‘Drop in’ basis at lunchtime on the days that they are in school.  For more information on the services offerred by connecxion, click on the following link

Additional support for the Careers Programmes is provided by access to Careers Information Websites.  There are two which students are encouraged to use:

www.fasttomato.com - This website will help students to explore options best suited to their needs by a series of questionnaires and follow the links given in the outcomes.

www.aimhigherwm-alps.org - this is a work-based learning resource, designed to help people find their perfect learning route and ideal career.  On top of providing a detailed database of qualifications and courses across the West Midlands, it also offers:

§        Progression Maps- clear routes to Higher Education;

§        Personal Planning- shows a plan of how learners can achieve their goals;

§        Best Practise- where ideas and experiences can be shared with others;

§        Latest News- Find out what’s new in the world of education.

Work Experience

Why do we have Work Experience placements?

  • To help give students a realistic idea of what work entails.
  • To help students make a more informed choice of job or career.
  • Help students assess their school performance in relation to qualifications they may need.
  • Develop awareness and personal effectiveness in a situation away from young friends.
  • To help students to learn to mix with adults of a differing age range.
  •  To give students the opportunity to show initiative and responsibility out of school.
  • To help students understand the relationship between school and the world of work.
  • Creating a sense of achievement in the student having given or produced a product in a team effort.

Evidence of Work Experience is often asked for when applying for College courses, Apprenticeships, Training Placements, Employment and referred to in UCAS Personal Statements

.

At Wolgarston, students take part in Work Experience during the Autumn Term in Year 11.  Some students also do additional Work Experience during Post 16 in order to support their studies and University applications.
